The total number of IDPs in South Sudan is difficult to determine due to the large and complex population movements underway.

Of the approximately 4 million IDPs displaced by the civil war, is estimated that over 2 million returned to South Sudan, Abyei and Southern Kordofan between the signing of the CPA in January 2005 and the end of 2009. However, is believed that 10% of these returnees were eventually displaced once more.
